Onam is around the corner, and we all are excited to celebrate Onam after two long years of pandemic struggles. The first thing we love about Onam is the full course of vegetarian Onasadhya. This year, let's prepare the Onasadhya with all its pride and piety and also serve it in the right way.
In this Onam, let’s relish your taste with the traditional taste of Ajmi and also serve it in the intended right way, thus let’s eat it right and also serve it right.
The banana leaf, in which the Sadhya will be served should be placed on the right-hand side of the person eating the meal. Once the banana leaf is placed then you can start serving with a pinch of salt. Then add each side dish from the left side in smaller quantities.
A Poovan Pazham (Baby Yellow Banana) should be placed on the bottom left and next to it Pappadam.
Sarkara Varatti (Jaggery coated banana chips) and Upperi (banana chips) should be placed next.
After the sweets, we can place Manga Achar or Naranga Achar or both.
Now, we can focus on sides vegetarian dishes like Thoran /Mezhukkupuratti (vegetable stir fry with coconut)
Next, you can move to Pachadi and then Khichadi. Followed by Aviyal, Olan, Erissery, and Kootu curry. If you have any other side dishes, they can also be served at this level.
After the arrival of all these essential side dishes, now we can serve the rice under the dishes. Kerala rice or Matta is preferred but you can choose as per your liking.
In the Southern part of Kerala, the next step is to serve parippu curry along with ghee. However, it depends on your traditions.
Now, the star of the sadhya, Sambar is served. After Sambar, you can serve Moru Curry, Resam, Pulissery, and Kalan, as per your wish and availability.
The well-deserved, super special Onasadhya is now served. As the first step, you can have the side dishes and rice.
Now, it’s time to welcome the superstar and the most anticipated part of sadhya - Payasam
You can have the Payasam with Banana and Pappadam in the Banana leaf.
After completing your payasam and folding your banana leaf you can finish your Onasadya by a glass of Buttermilk or Rasam to help your digestion.
Onam is incomplete with a proper Onasadhya. This Onam, let’s prepare the perfect Onasadhya with authentic spices from Ajmi and serve it in the traditional way.
